Believe THIS!

When asking God for guidance, trying to live the right life and trying to hear His voice, we can often get caught up in wondering whether we heard right. This sort of thinking can quickly cause spiritual paralysis. But I do not recall any scripture where God actually commands us to hear right.

My Sheep Hear My Voice

A promise springs to mind: “My sheep hear my voice.” This is not a command, it’s a promise.

This observation seems to me to be in line with one of the facets of God’s character, which is to never ask of us to do something which we have no ability to control. It is impossible for me to make myself hear right, or wrong. I can only practice to listen as well as possible.

Two Things To Believe Regarding Guidance

So one of the most encouraging scriptures I have found which puts your heart right at ease over this whole big issue, is this:

Heb 11:6 And without faith it is not possible to be well-pleasing to him, for it is necessary for anyone who comes to God to have the belief that God is, and that he is a rewarder of all those who make a serious search for him.

Here, God asks us only to believe two things:

1) That He IS.

2) That He is a rewarder of those who search for Him seriously.

So instead of worrying about whether I am hearing right, I worry about whether I can honestly say that I am seeking Him with all my heart, mind and strength. If I am doing THAT, then I can believe that He will reward me – and speaking to me clearly is only one of the many, many rewards that I can expect from that.

Do this, and you will please Him – regardless of whether you heard right or wrong. Pleasing Him, is after all what our entire lives are all about.

Love

Ashton
